Understanding Prevention Provider Roles

Overview
Prevention professionals and organizations operate to implement prevention services across systems of care in various settings including governmental agencies that administer healthcare, social services, public health, justice, academic services, and most important, the communities themselves. Collaboration across all levels is crucial to achieve comprehensive prevention. This community of practice session will dive into the roles and responsibilities of prevention providers at different levels to clarify how these systems work. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences collaborating across systems in their prevention work.
About the Presenters

Gabe Teran (he/him) is a 20+ year professional in youth and community advocacy work. He is a subject matter expert in the fields of substance use prevention and youth development. He has also delivered engaging, prevention-focused workshops at statewide and national conferences. Gabe has provided direct services to young people for the entirety of his career – many from historically challenged communities.
He has also directly overseen substance use prevention initiatives and developed youth leadership programming. Gabe holds a Master of Science degree in Management and Leadership as well as two certifications for substance use disorders work in the state of California.

Amanda Montgomery (she/her) is a highly experienced professional with a strong track record of over 20 years in community and system change. She received the NASADAD National Award for Innovative Substance Abuse and Mental Health Prevention Programs, Practices, and Policies. The award recognized her exceptional contribution to co-authoring three youth-driven prevention programs and school-based curricula. Applying Risk and Protective factor theory and research, she designs prevention and early intervention models and curricula that demonstrate organizational change and student impact.
Amanda’s expertise spans various fields, including higher education, early childhood mental health services, substance use disorder prevention, K-12 schools, and child abuse and neglect prevention efforts. In her most recent work in higher education, Amanda focuses on system change to bridge equity gaps and bring California’s Community College’s Vision for Success into reality through the Guided Pathways framework. Her unwavering dedication to improving economic mobility and addressing social drivers of education highlights her passion for ensuring equitable opportunities and success for all.
