ABHPC in Action
Organizations
Consultant: Bob Saltz
Type of TA: Consultation
“Our experience with Bob Saltz from ABHPC was a great one and proved to be a success! The purpose in consulting Bob for technical assistance was to follow an evidence-based approach with our San Bernardino County environmental prevention providers and to collect an appropriate number of drug use perception surveys to effectively inform prevention interventions. This data will be useful for our department and our community partners. Bob was of great help, as he assisted us not only by explaining the process of obtaining a statistically significant number of perception surveys, but also given our vast region, in helping our environment prevention providers collect the right number of surveys. This was instrumental in the development of our proposal for our management team. Bob was knowledgeable about the subject matter and made our experience easy and seamless. He made time for us and met with our Program Coordinator remotely, which was very convenient. Bob took an interest in our project and followed up with us once we proposed our findings to our department’s management team. Because of his assistance, our management team was very impressed with our research and proposal, and they agreed to lower the number of drug use perception surveys the environmental prevention providers are required to collect annually. Thanks!“

Program ManagerConsultant: Brittney Sampson and Lane Krumpos
Level of TA: Customized Training
“We had the good fortune to partner with Lane Krumpos and Brittney Sampson at ABPHC on a presentation and workshop at the Sacramento Job Corps Center for over 250 transition-age youth. The training focused on managing mental health and access to community resources while navigating stressors that could impact job training and employment opportunities. Lane and Brittney couldn’t have been more gracious in sharing their knowledge and lived experiences with the students. They offered practical tools to prevent and cope with challenges. We so appreciated the team’s respectful engagement and ability to establish rapport and trust with the students as we explored sensitive topics and hard conversations. Kudos to Lane, Brittney, and ABPHC team!“

“Our Substance Use Disorder Prevention Department requested technical assistance for support in implementing a new direction within our county to increase community outreach and engagement. ABHPC’s consultations services were instrumental in assisting us with the creation of a logic model that aligned with state standards while meeting the unique needs throughout our varying communities and rural regions.“

Health Education Coordinator and Supervising Health Education CoordinatorConsultant: Nicole Valenzuela
Level of TA: ABHPC Emerging Professional Mentorship
“I would love to share the experiences with ABHPC and the mentor-mentee experience. Gabriela and I have had great meetings and calls in the first couple of months and we reconnected to revitalize together. I truly value this mentoring relationship because it is bi-directional and I am learning just as much from her. I look forward to continuing this mentoring relationship.“
Nicole Valenzuela (Mentor)
Prevention Specialist and ABHPC Consultant“Through conversations with Nicole, I’ve learned the value of resource sharing and building bridges between networks to decrease service gaps. Issues people may be facing are so often interconnected with a lack of support in multiple areas. This experience has emphasized the importance of working with providers across sectors, which led to a workshop I recently co-developed with a program that focuses on mental wellness for underserved/marginalized communities.“

Prevention Specialist and ABHPC ConsultantConsultant: Maggie Steele
Level of TA: Customized Training and Consultation
“Maggie Steele has worked with the Tribes of Lake and Mendocino Counties and Sunrise since the early 1990’s. Her style promotes personal connections with communities through grief and experiences of family conflict and murder by bringing hope during the darkest moments of loss, grief and destruction of familial relationships. She bravely worked when the grief was intergenerational and destructive. She held children’s hands and drew pictures with them because they didn’t have the words to express the depth of pain and loss. Maggie was there for at least three generations for the Tribal Communities of Lake and Mendocino as well as throughout the state of California. She is part of the familial threads and yet maintains professionalism. We are grateful that ABHPC funded her important work in the context of substance use prevention efforts. It has touched many, many lives, intergenerational families, and has clearly changed the paths of many young lives through Indigenous teachings. A movie needs to be made of Maggie’s work; the communities of generations that have changed their paths of life, and how she has inspired other professionals and community workers, especially through tough times and when there is no funding, but the work of healing needs to be done.“

“Los Angeles County Public Health Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) has worked with CARS for many years, so the project’s name change to Advanced Behavioral Health Prevention California seemed like just a name change at first. ABHPC has evolved into an amazing “re-vamp” that has allowed our 34 contracted agency staff and SAPC staff to stay connected and current on all things Prevention. ABHPC has provided our SAPC Prevention team and community contractors with training that addresses varying topics, from basic substance use prevention strategies to a customized training that addresses leadership, public speaking, and the importance of relationship building. The customization option was an amazing experience and the partnership throughout the process was second to none. We have also utilized online live training events for our SAPC staff and contracts, as well as pre-recorded training content when onboarding new staff. Trying to stay on top of current trends while onboarding new team members at the same time was difficult for a county as large as ours, so to have training at our fingertips is invaluable. Lane, Lizzie, and all the ABHPC staff and consultants are amazing. I would recommend everyone in the primary prevention field, whether new or seasoned, take advantage of not only the free, quality training and technical assistance, but also the opportunity to build your professional prevention network and forge new relationships.“
