Maximizing the Reach and Success of Community-Based Strategies and Community Partnerships
Overview:
Prevention Application Community of Practice spaces will support the continuing education of prevention professionals in a manner that is engaging, focused on skill building, dynamic, and in line with statewide goals. Together we will “unpack” what has been learned in professional competency training events, thus supporting the application of skills and development of sector partnerships and networking. Prevention Application spaces are intended to be a collective learning space with reflection opportunities for participants.

Community-based strategies and partnerships are vital for effective prevention efforts. This presentation explores principles that enhance community-led initiatives from the perspectives of coalitions, stakeholders, rightsholders, community-based organizations, local champions, and more. Emphasizing local knowledge, cultural responsivity, and grassroots engagement, participants will learn to foster strong partnerships leveraging local resources and networks. The session covers practical approaches for building and sustaining partnerships, including effective communication, collaboration, and decision-making. We will also discuss measuring the impact of these initiatives. Attendees will gain tools and insights to overcome challenges, enhance prevention efforts, and contribute to healthier, resilient communities through collaborative partnerships.
About the Presenters

Estefania Caldera-Alvarado (she/her/ella) has a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and is a Prevention Coordinator for a community-based organization. As a coordinator, she has led a variety of training for youth, parents, and community members on Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention to increase knowledge and facilitate conversation around substances. Estefania believes that healthy communities are achieved through collaborative effort. She is passionate about empowering community members to take action in advocating for themselves, their families, and their communities. Through her work, she looks to influence the next generation to take their voice and wield it to make an impact in their community and beyond.

Jason Strickler (he/him/el) is an Advocate and Social Entrepreneur from Sylmar, CA in the San Fernando Valley. Focused on social change and youth empowerment, Strickler is a leader in the substance use prevention movement in Los Angeles County, doing coalition coordination, building and maintaining strategic relationships, and designing and coordinating programs that benefit at-risk populations. His 10 + years of experience working across various industries provides him with unique insights on how to build and maintain healthy organizational culture. He is earning his masters in Social Entrepreneurship and Change at Pepperdine Graduate School of Education and Psychology and holds a BA in Communication Studies with a minor in Journalism from California State University, Northridge. He also enjoys reading, music, plants, and has 2 cats: Sniffles and Gravy.

Sandy Logan (she/her) is a seasoned Certified Prevention Specialist who has been working in the prevention field for over a decade. Her extensive experience in public policy, public health, social marketing, media advocacy, health education, community capacity/power building, and leadership development has equipped her with a wealth of knowledge and skills, which she has put to good use in her work as a prevention specialist. Sandy has worked closely with various communities to develop comprehensive strategies that build capacity and address the underlying causes of community drug problems.
In her role as a prevention specialist, Sandy has been leading local efforts aimed at addressing prescription drug abuse/misuse. Specifically, she has been instrumental in establishing a broad base of community support that includes law enforcement, pharmacies, pharmacy students, convenience stores, schools, medical professionals, and community-based organizations. Sandy’s efforts have culminated in the development of public education campaigns, as well as the implementation of innovative prevention efforts, such as increasing the number of safe disposal sites, all aimed at addressing substance abuse.
