Part 1: Centering Community Voices: Collaborative Prevention Strategies with Pregnant People, Parents, and Caregivers of Children Under 5
The journey of building a family is unique for everyone. Substance use disorder (SUD) prevention strategies, including evidence-based programs (EBPs) frequently include elements that relate to or directly support the family domain. This session will explore comprehensive prevention practices and approaches within the family domain, including preventative support for pregnant and parenting people, best practices for early prevention during the early childhood years, and effective ways to engage parents, family members, caregivers, and guardians through the implementation of local prevention programming. Participants will learn about the importance of the family domain within a comprehensive SUD prevention strategic plan, as well as EBPs, engagement and communication strategies, and proactive approaches that center and elevate family voices.
About the Presenter

Guadalupe Ramos (she/her), Ph.D. earned a Doctoral degree in prevention science and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Ramos’ work centers on mental health, substance use, stress and coping, and prevention and treatment interventions for minoritized communities. As a bicultural and bilingual scholar, Dr. Ramos is committed to improving the health of historically underserved populations. Dr. Ramos is also a strong advocate for participatory research methodologies that empower communities. On her free time, Dr. Ramos enjoys dancing and cooking.

Nicole Valenzuela (she/her) is a licensed social worker deeply committed to community-centered care, emphasizing upstream prevention and advocacy to create lasting positive impact. Her work transcends substance use prevention, adopting a holistic approach to foster well-being across diverse communities. By applying data-driven strategies like the Strategic Prevention Framework, Protective Factors, and trauma-informed practices, Nicole aims to cultivate inclusive, equitable, and resilient environments where all individuals can thrive.
Central to Nicole’s work is building strong, trusting relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring that programs are developed are tailored with and for the community to be served. Her expertise spans program planning, program evaluation, needs assessment, and multi-sector collaboration, enabling her to lead initiatives that generate sustainable, long-term change.
Nicole is also dedicated to fostering the growth of future advocates and prevention professionals. She offers technical assistance, training, and resources, empowering others to advance their knowledge and skills in prevention work. Guided by empathy, effective communication, and deep compassion, Nicole’s approach ensures that individuals and communities alike are equipped not just to overcome their challenges, but to flourish in environments designed for their success. She is passionate about driving meaningful, equitable change that uplifts our communities.
